i remember we were walking on the path
on that first day we met you made yourself vomit
it took me by surprise
i think you did it just to show a couple older kids you would
it was a proper introduction
drove a stake into my memory
you gave your beating heart at summer meadow stickball games
i could feel the wind your bat made
standing at the pitchers mound
you played your hardest every game
and then at night there in the spotlight
doing flips across the stage
i remember this one brutal conversation that we had
i think it was our last
you said it meant so much to you to prove to me that you were worthy
so difficult to say and made so vulnerable

nor could i think of how to say right then
how deeply i respected you
it was the day before thanksgiving learned you died
i told my sister in the car
she quietly cried
a nervous smile found it's way onto my face
surprising and confusing me

i felt so callous and detached then
all the way home on that morbid silent drive
since you left earth i've done some time thinking
bout the pure fact that i knew you
and reacted to you how i did
it made me angry to play ping-pong with you
why, i could not understand
something was just grating at me
after some excavating honestly
i found the thing that bugged me most about you was your honesty
